School Refurbishment

One of the highlights of our summer 2022 works was the creation of a space for a new Library within a school in Birmingham. The School had three existing areas that they wanted to repurpose in order to create a new bespoke area for their Library. These areas were an existing small storeroom, a staff work room, and half of a large classroom. The finished result was a total transformation, which created a perfect and spacious environment for their new Library.

The project took a great deal of coordination and involved many trades. Our first task was to clear all of the areas completely of furniture and to remove any services that were no longer required, or that needed repositioning. This included a small kitchenette in the staff work room, and the electrics and data points throughout. We then began work on removing the stud walls between the storeroom and the staff work room, and at the same time we began building the new adjoining partition wall that would form the rear wall of the Library and the new rear wall of the existing classroom. In addition to this we built a stud wall with a door, to house and enclose the School’s server unit, which was to remain within the space. We also blocked up the former doorway to the old staff work room from the main corridor.

All of the new walls were then plastered, and the entire space was then decorated throughout, to give a bright and clean finish. We also installed new entrance fire rated double doors to the Library, along with a single fire exit door within the new rear wall. These were then decorated and fitted with all of the required hardware and signage. New feature lighting was then installed above the entrance to the Library to add further impact.

One of the most striking aspects of the works was the new flooring. We installed IVC Commercial’s Art Intervention carpet tiles, that incorporated the School’s colours, and which were laid in an eye-catching pattern. Outside of the Library, which is situated near to the rear entrance for the School, we removed their existing barrier matting and replaced it with Heckmondwike’s Hobnail matting, this provided a hardwearing flooring solution for the intended environment.

The School were over the moon with the finished results. We completed the project on time and to an exceptionally high standard. We manage to make their vision a reality by adapting the existing areas to create a vibrant and fitting environment for their new Library.
